Obituary for Charles Edward Jackson

Charles E. Jackson, long time Winside resident, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at the Stanton Health Center from heart disease. Charles Edward Jackson was born on December 27, 1925 to John Kent and Etta Louvina (Overman) Jackson at Winside. He lived on a farm northwest of Winside and attended grade school at Blue Grass Valley District 58. He graduated from Winside High School in 1943. Charles had various jobs in the 1940’s working at Fleer’s Daylight Store, Weible Grocery Store, REA running electricity to people’s homes and farming.

Charles married Veryl Jean Schellpeper on March 12, 1950 in Stanton and he continued farming in the Winside area. In 1967, he moved his family into town and worked at Tri-County Co-op. In 1978 he worked at 3M until retiring in 1987. Upon retirement he kept busy delivering the Omaha World Herald, helping at the Winside Co-op and growing vegetables.

Charles was a member of the Winside Volunteer Fire Department for 28 years and an EMT on the Winside Rescue Unit which he helped organize in 1970. He also served on the Winside School Board and as Mayor and Trustee on the Winside Village Board. The family belonged to the Winside Saddle Club in the 1960’s. Charles and his wife were in partnership with Dale and Marseline Langneberg operating the Winside Roller Rink in the Winside Auditorium from 1964 to 1969. They belonged to a Bridge Card Club and enjoyed going to dances. Charles moved into the Stanton Health Center in 2016.

Charles is survived by his children, Bob (Sheryl) Jackson of Omaha, Barbara Jackson of Norfolk, and Scott Jackson of Winside, a daughter-in-law Julie Jackson of Lincoln, 3 grandchildren, 5 great-children and a sister Virginia (Warren) Holtgrew of Virginia.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents Kent and Etta, wife Veryl, son Jim and grandson Mark Jackson.
