Obituary for Irvin Robert Arens

Irvin Robert Arens, age 91 of Yankton formerly of Randolph, died on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, SD. He was born January 19, 1926, at Crofton, Nebraska the son of John and Caroline (Luft) Arens. He attended Knox County rural school and St. Rose grade school and graduated from Crofton High school in 1944. On March 13, 1945, Irvin was inducted into the United States Army during WW II serving a tour of duty in the 42nd Engineer Construction Battalion in Soule, Korea Irvin was honorably discharged on December 28, 1946.

On September 15, 1947, Irvin married Barbara Steffen at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Constance, NE. The couple farmed southwest of Crofton until the family moved to farm north of Randolph in 1955. He continued farming until they retired in 2001 and moved to Randolph. In November 2015 Irvin moved to Yankton to live at Avera Sacred Heart Majestic Bluffs.

Irvin was active in his church as a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Randolph serving on the parish council, C.C.D. teacher, and Eucharistic Minister; Cursillo; member of Knights of Columbus Council #5143 of Randolph serving as Financial Secretary for many years.

Serving his community Irvin was a member of National Farmers Organization (N.F.O.) and served on the Cedar County F.H.A. board of directors. He enjoyed woodworking and making gifts for his family.

Surviving Irvin are his 8 children and their spouses John and Sue (Rogers) Arens of Crofton; Steve and Jean (Sorensen) Arens of Randolph; Arlan and Carla (Schnieders) Arens of Omaha; Marcel and Janet (Suing) Arens of Hartington; Joyce (Arens) and Doyle Stevens of Crofton; Tom and Jobi (Tinajera) Arens of Peoria, AZ; Julie (Arens) and Mark Lewandowski of Overland Park, KS; Kevin and Kathy (Helsing) Arens of Lincoln, NE; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; 2 siblings Alvin and Sharon Arens of Norfolk; Eleanor and Sam Nelson of St. Helena; 1 sister-in-law Margaret Yates of Crofton.

Irvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 62 years, Barbara on October 21, 2009; 5 brothers Raymond and Francis Arens; Lawrence and Mary Ann Arens; Clarence and Arlene Arens; Harold Arens; Gerald Arens; 3 Sisters Ceceil & Ab Reifenrath; Leona and Raymond Thunker; Viola and Norbert Reifenrath.

Interment: St. Frances Catholic Cemetery in Randolph, NE
Military Rites: Alvin Kessler V.F.W. Post #5545 and American Legion Post #113 of Randolph, NE
Visitation: 3-8 P.M. Friday with 7 P.M. Christian Wake Service followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary all at St. Frances CHURCH in Randolph; under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home in Randolph.
