Obituary for Mildred Irene Mae Bruhn

Mildred Irene (Mae) Bruhn, age 96 of Stanton, died Saturday, September 29, 2017, at Stanton Health Center in Stanton. She was born November 6, 1920, to Richard Amos Kirkland and Erna Martha Wegner Kirkland in Stanton County. She attended St. John’s Lutheran School and Stanton High School. She had to leave school to help with the family at home when her father was killed in an accident. Mildred married Elmer Henry Bruhn in August of 1941 in West Point, Nebraska. They spent the majority of their married life residing in Stanton. She had 3 children, Midge, Rick, and Nancy.

After raising her children, Millie worked in Norfolk at Woolworth’s and Schwesers. Then she worked in Stanton for Harold Suchan at the grocery store. The employment that gave her the most pleasure was at the Stanton Public Library. She worked and volunteered there many years. She enjoyed each of the librarians that she worked with and would have stayed there until her last days if she could have. Her favorite pastime was reading and listening to books on CD. She and Elmer enjoyed dancing and meeting friends at the VFW Club or Tony’s. As her macular degeneration progressed Millie was helped so much by her good friends Wilma Dopson and Donna Best for which she was very grateful. She also appreciated the visits from her pastor, Linda Mohr. Millie was a member of the Stanton Congregational church and she taught Sunday school many years.

She is survived by brother, Ken Webb of Friendswood, Texas, daughter Midge Reeder of Lincoln, NE, son Rick (Dianne) Bruhn of Colorado Springs, CO and son-in-law Peter O’Meara of Aurora, CO. 8 grandchildren, Mike (Erin) Reeder, Jon (Jennifer) Reeder all of Lincoln, NE. Jeanine (Scott ) Stebbing of Queen Creek, AZ; Rob Reeder, Kansas City, MO; Ann (Shannon) McCartney of Sidney, NE; Kristin (Ross) Hoffmeyer of Battle Creek, NE; Scott (Stephanie) Bruhn of Lincoln, NE and Taryn O’Meara of Aurora, CO; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Guy (Jeri) Bruhn of Norfolk, NE and Mrs. Ervin (Dorothy) Bruhn of Rapid City, SD; 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, 2 sisters, 1 brother, and son-in-law.
