Obituary for George L. Benson, Jr.

George L. Benson, Jr., age 75 of Stanton, died Monday February 19, 2018 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. He was born October 7, 1942 at Norfolk, Nebraska the son of George, Sr. and Ruby (Dopp) Benson. He attended Stanton County District #9 and graduated from Stanton High School in 1961 and attended Norfolk Junior College.

On April 3, 1962 George married Mary Denney at New England Congregational United Church of Christ in Stanton. The couple made their home near Stanton where George farmed for many years. He was employed as a Funeral Attendant at Johnson Funeral Homes in Stanton, Norfolk and Randolph since 1998. George drilled seed for pastures and farm fields in and around Stanton County for many years.

George was active in his church as a lifelong member and served as a Deacon and Trustee; He contributed to the Stanton Community as a member of Stanton Cemetery Association where he served as Sexton; Member of Stanton Athletic Boosters; a past member of Stanton Community schools Board of Directors; Past President of Stanton County Farm Bureau; Past baseball coach for Stanton Legion Baseball; Past Master of Masonic Lodge #41 A.F. and A.M. of Stanton; Past Worthy Patron of Order of Eastern Star Chapter #146 of Stanton; Past Shriner; George was well known for playing Santa Claus in the Stanton area and at Denton, Nebraska for many years.

An avid outdoorsman he enjoyed fishing, playing fast pitch softball, baseball, hunting, bowling, golf, and playing cards and was actively involved with his children and grandchildren’s many activities.

George is survived by his wife of almost 56 years Mary (Denney) Benson, 3 Children Kristin and Steve Zahnow of Littleton, CO; Brett and Kris Benson of Lincoln; Brian and Wendy Benson of Stanton; 8 Grandchildren Evan Benson, Grant Benson, Laura Benson, Leah Zahnow, Zach Zahnow, Paige Zahnow, Jackson Benson, and Reagan Benson; 3 Brothers Gary and Bonnie Benson of Stanton; Roger Benson of Avoca, IA; Lonnie Benson of Stanton; George’s Aunt Ruth (Benson) Anderson and his cousin Larry Anderson of San Jose, CA; Brother and Sisters-In-Law Carole Lou Armbruster of Aurora, NE; JoAnne and Ronnie Schellpeper of Stanton; Sharon and Allen Wolff of Madison; Nannette and Allan Neuhaus of Grand Island, NE; Nancy and Mark Dopp and Nancy and Gilbert Kirk all of Missouri.

Preceding him in death are his parents; sister-in-law Peggy (Roger) Benson. brother-in-law Daniel Armbruster, nephew Steven Wolff, and niece Ann (Armbruster) Garrett.
